British man Jay Slater – likely found dead in Tenerife

THIS BLOG IS IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER. PLEASE SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM FOR UPDATES.

Jay Slater is a 19 year old British teen who has gone missing while on vacation in Spain.  He was last seen on the morning of Monday June 17.  He attended the NRG music festival the night before and he left the festival with two men.  He stayed with them at an Airbnb in a rural area on the island and he never made it back to his friends.

As some background into Jay, he is an apprentice bricklayer.  His mother is Debbie, father is Warren and his brother is Zac.  He lives in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire.

Jay went on the holiday with two friends, Lucy and Brad.  The trio attended the three-day NRG festival together from 14-16 June.

Info from the NRG website –

We arrive in Tenerife with a incredible line up of our favourite artists for 3 days of madness featuring pool parties, boat parties, outdoor raves, nightclub takeovers & much more. Accommodation also included!

This is some info about Tenerife:

Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, off West Africa. It’s dominated by Mt. Teide, a dormant volcano that is Spain’s tallest peak. Tenerife may be best known for its Carnaval de Santa Cruz, a huge pre-Lent festival with parades, music, dancing and colorful costumes.  The population is around 950k.

And this is some info about the conditions and weather in the area at the time that Jay vanished.

Locals and experts warned of the perilous conditions in the area – where the air is “thin”, temperatures change rapidly and the mountains drop sharply to the water below.

As the search enters its seventh day today temperatures are expected to hit as high as 29 (85f) degrees.

The UV rating also sits at “extreme” with a figure of 11 and 12 peaking at around 1pm – anything over 11 is classed as extreme and dangerous.

There has been footage released of Jay at the festival, in the early hours of June 17.

Lucy and Brad decided to go back to their accommodation while Jay left with the two men who he had made friends with at the rave.

At around 7.30am on June 17, Jay posted this final Snapchat.

This info about what happened is from the GFM that has now raised over 35k pounds.

Hi everyone my name is Lucy. I have come on holiday to Tenerife to attend the NRG festival with my friend Jay & another friend. On the last day of the festival, I left alone, earlier than everyone else, because I was tired from the weekend. I woke up to a phone call off Jay at 8:30 AM saying “he was lost in the mountains, he wasn’t aware of his surroundings, he desperately needed a drink & his phone was on 1%”. He had met 2 people on Sunday night and left with them to go to their apartment. Their apartment was miles away from civilisation and in a very secluded location. He left at 8am, and walked half an hour before frantically ringing me when his phone reached 1%.

The Airbnb where Jay had stayed is thought to have been around a ten hour walk from where Lucy and Brad were.  Jay had missed the bus back to the southern part of the island so he apparently decided to walk.

Lucy spoke about the situation.  She said Jay “ended up in the middle of nowhere” after befriending two Brits and returning to their Airbnb. She told how Jay went “to a friend’s house, someone that he has met on holiday. One of the people he has met has hired a car out of here, so he’s driven them back to his apartment and Jay has gone there not realising how far away it is.

She added: “He’s ended up out in the middle of nowhere. Jay was obviously thinking he would be able to get home from there.”

Lucy has also said that someone took her up to the area to search for Jay when she realised he was missing. An American woman offered to drive Lucy up into the mountains where she says they ‘drove around all day’.

Ophelia, the proprietor of the Airbnb, commented: “It’s dangerous walking around here, it’s easy to lose yourself. He walked up the road when I saw him for the last time. He was alone. He was walking normally, though he was fast.”

Many people have questioned why Jay didn’t wait for another bus and Ophelia spoke about that.

She explained: “I held up my fingers on my hands to say 10am as he didn’t understand me then I went home briefly before driving up the mountain to Buenavista del Norte, but this time I saw him walking on the road out of the village. It was no more than ten or fifteen minutes after I had spoken to him and he was about a kilometre from the house. I drove past him and that’s the last I saw him.”

The two men flew back to the UK after being briefly questioned by Tenerife police.

Lucy managed to track the men down at their Airbnb before they left, using photo clues from Jay’s Snapchat, which revealed his location. She said: “They seemed startled and surprised that I had found them, and I asked them where Jay was.

“They said he had gone out to try and look for cigarettes and then come back and said he was leaving to try and get a bus back into town. They just seemed shocked that I had managed to find them and I know the police have spoken to them but I’ve since found out they have left the country. They need to be spoken to properly.”

The final known location of his phone was at Rural de Teno Park, a mountainous nature reserve.

When Jay did not show back up on Monday, his family were alerted and they flew out to Tenerife.  He was declared missing on Tuesday, June 18.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed the investigation. It said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities”.

When Debbie arrived, she spoke to the media.  “I’ve only been in Tenerife for about 10 minutes and I’ve just had a quick chat with someone from the British Embassy and am waiting for them to call back so I know a bit more,” she said. “The consulate has been really good so far.”

Debbie also told ITV:

“He’s just an ace person, everyone loves being in his company. He’s the life and soul, he’s just a beautiful boy.”

Lucy and Debbie made missing person flyers originally, with their personal phone numbers on them.

Debbie told the media how people with “northern accents” had been phoning her with hidden numbers and claiming they had her son captive and were keeping him because he owed them money. She said: “Some of the phone calls I’ve been getting have been horrible. I just don’t know why people would want to do things like this.

“I’ve been getting lots of prank calls. It’s sickening. People ringing me and saying they’ve got Jay because he owes them money. But it’s not putting me off and I want to keep this in the news because it’s going to increase the chances of Jay being found safe and well which is obviously what we’re praying for.”

Lucy spoke to the media on Wednesday June 19, about a false lead that had been given to authorities.  This caused them to divert their search for a time to a new area.

“Someone has given a false lead to the police saying he’s rang a taxi down to Los Cristianos.

“If this was the case he would have rang his mum or one of us. I know him well and he would not have us worrying. Someone is trying to deter the police from him being up there. I’m starting to think he’s been kidnapped.”

After this lead was found to be false, the search continued at the nature reserve where Jay’s phone was last known to be.

Debbie spoke around this time about how she had encouraged Jay to go on the vacation and wished that she hadn’t.

“I was loving that he was going and saying you’ll love it, you’ll come back and you’ll want to go again,” she said. “Now I just wish I hadn’t encouraged him to go.” She believes that someone must have taken Jay pointing to the fact that “there is a main road, there’s bus stops there, there’s cafes, it’s a hiking route, there’s people about, people must have seen him. And if people haven’t seen him, someone must have taken him.”

As we mentioned earlier, there is a GFM for Jay and this has come under a lot of scrutiny.

This case is absolutely wild online. There are rumors about drugs, drug mules and even the mafia. Some people seem to believe that the GFM has been set up in order to raise some type of ransom to save Jay?

‘They think that Lucy is either behind this or set him up or has received information that he’s been held for ransom by some freaking mafia. Honestly, there are 50 million rumors surrounding the money and where he is or what could’ve happened to him.

I think people are just all running with the rumor that the mafia needs 30 K to release him.’

Around June 23, Debbie made this update on there.

Hi everyone, this is Debbie, Jay’s mother. Thank you all for your generosity and kindness during this difficult time. I wanted to confirm that this is the only GoFundMe fundraiser approved by our family. We have not yet withdrawn any funds and are currently covering the expenses, such as the trip to Tenerife and accommodation, ourselves. The funds will remain on hold with GoFundMe until we post a further update on this page.

We are extremely worried and are doing everything we can to find Jay. Please continue to share our fundraiser far and wide. Your support means the world to us, and we are grateful for any help you can provide.

Thank you again.

CCTV of a man that is possibly Jay has recently been released.

The image is understood to have been captured in Santiago del Teide at about 6pm on Monday night – 10 hours after he was last confirmed to have been seen in the village of Masca, nearly four miles uphill.

His mum Debbie said of the possible sighting: “Someone has come forward to say they saw someone who they thought was Jay walking back down the road sat on a bench. He was with two men looking a bit worse for wear, and they were by a church, this guy has come forward and told the police about it and they are looking into it.

“We don’t know if it was Jay for sure, but it’s a start. They said it was about 6pm which is 10 hours after he was seen by the lady in the village. But if it was him what was he doing there and who are these two men?” They are showing the picture to people in the village along with posters of the missing teen to see if they can jog people’s memories.

There are some huge Facebook groups for this case and in one of them, they discuss that Jay’s instagram had been logged into.

One Family friend wrote: “Jay’s mums asked I post this… For everyone asking who has logged into his instagram account, it’s not him or her, somebody else has logged into it.” The same friend turned comments off on the post, which has been liked more than 100 times.

On June 29, the search for Jay was officially called off. “The search operation is no longer active, but the case is still open and there are several lines of investigation,” a Civil Guard spokeswoman said.

There is still new information coming out. We have learned that Jay may have stolen a 12k Rolex before he went missing.

It is thought Jay posted a Snapchat saying he had taken the £12,000 Rolex from an unknown person. MailOnline has approached Jay’s family about the claims.

Police previously said they were investigating a scuffle outside Papagayo Beach Club, where Jay was seen partying the night he went missing.

It is believed a fight – involving a burly Eastern European man who reportedly had his valuable Rolex stolen – broke out after the venue had closed.

One of the men who Jay stayed at the AirBNB with has also come forward.

Ayub Qassim said that they invited Jay back to the AirBNB. The other man is known only as Johnny Vegas.

Ayub (31) was jailed nine years ago for being the mastermind behind a sophisticated operation to flood Wales with Class A drugs.

Ayub spoke to the media this week and said said: ‘The only comment I have to make is that Jay came to the house alive, and he left the house alive.

‘I let the geezer stay at mine because he had nowhere else to go, his friends had all left him.

‘I know Jay, through friends, I’m not going to bring someone back to mine if I don’t know them.

‘I’m doing the geezer a favour and now my face is all over the news. It’s a bit mental. I haven’t even done anything.’

‘If I’d fallen out with him would he even come to mine?

‘There were no problems. You’ve seen the last images of him with his red blanket around him.

‘I don’t know if he had beef elsewhere because I don’t know him that well, I only know him through friends.’

Former detective turned TV sleuth Mark Williams-Thomas flew to Tenerife to help with the search – and said he wanted to speak to the two men who rented the apartment Jay last visited.

But Ayub said he had only spoken to authorities in Tenerife.

He said: ‘I’ve spoken to the Spanish police and they’ve told me not to speak to anyone which is why I’ve been quiet.

‘He’s a cool guy, Jay. He ain’t got a problem with me, I haven’t got a problem with him or his mates. We just all talk to each other and everything was sweet.’

On July 15, it was announced that human remains had been found in the search for Jay.

Authorities made the following statement:

“The Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group of the Civil Guard has located the lifeless body of a young man in the Masca area after 29 days of constant search,” according to the statement.

“All indications indicate that it could be the young British man who has been missing since last June 17.”

  1. Rule 1 when I was young was never let your friends leave with a stranger. Something awful happened to that boy, very sad it could have been prevented!
