Son murdered his parents and lived with their bodies for months – Washington State

The people involved are William Vosler (68), his wife Eileen (66), their son Shane (33) and Shane’s girlfriend Sue Bin Lee (34).  You can see their social media accounts here:

Two welfare checks were called in for the address on Eastwood Avenue East prior to this incident.  One was on December 23, 2024.    A neighbor became concerned after they witnessed a truck in the driveway being towed away.  A deputy who went to the home said there was no obvious odor and no signs of forced entry.

A second check was performed at the address on December 29.  This happened after Sue Bin Lee allegedly posted statements online, indicating that she and Shane were considering taking their lives.  Despite this welfare check happening on December 29, Sue Bin made the posts online in November?   Entry was not made into the property on this date either.

Police spoke to neighbors who said they had not seen William or Eileen since August.  They also said that William’s new truck had recently been towed from the driveway. Deputies later discovered the truck had been repossessed.

Another neighbor said that William usually worked on his vehicle outside with the garage door open, but that they had not seen him for months. Other neighbors said food deliveries and packages were typically picked up within a couple of days.

After this last welfare check, deputies were able to connect with another of the Voslers’ sons.  He told them that he had not spoken with William since September, and that he thought it was ‘weird’ that the truck had been repossessed.

On New Year’s Eve, two of William and Eileen’s other sons went to the home to check on their parents.  A deputy went with them on standby.   To gain access to the home, an air conditioning unit on the second floor was removed.

One of the sons entered the home, and then rushed out under a minute later.  He said he saw a woman in one of the rooms, covered in blood.  The deputy “smelled a distinct odor of body decomposition” at the door of the home as more units responded to the scene.

When authorities entered the home, they said the condition was ‘very messy.’   Guns and cellphones were found in the home.

In the kitchen, the refrigerator door was partially opened with a door propped against it with “fluids coming from the bottom of the fridge,” court documents state.

There were notes found on fridges in the home.  “Time of death July 24th 5:45 a.m.” and “Time of death July 24th 3 p.m.” More notes about time of death were found on the freezer in the garage.

In an upstairs bedroom, Sue Bin was found.  She was on the bed and was ‘obviously deceased.’ In the main bedroom, deputies saw that the bathroom door was locked and they saw dried blood on the floor under the door.  There was a single bullet hole in the door.  It sounds like Shane’s body was blocking the door because it says that deputies were ‘unable to full force’ the door open.  They were able to peer in and saw a bullet and Shane’s body in the bathroom.

Some reports say that human remains (Eileen or William) were found in both a kitchen fridge and a garage fridge, while others say both their remains were found in appliances in the garage.

Autopsies were conducted.  It was determined that William died from a stab wound of the chest and blunt head trauma; Eileen died from multiple stab wounds of the chest and neck; Shane died from a gunshot wound to the head as a result of suicide and Sue Bin died from a gunshot wound to head with an undetermined manner of death.

Both William and Eileen’s deaths were ruled as homicides.   No motive has been given or made public.

“Everybody in that household died at a different time frame with the son being the last one to be deceased,” said Carly Cappetto, public information officer for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

“The mother and father had been deceased since sometime around the summer,” she said. “The son [and girlfriend] continued to live in that home for nearly six months or more when those deceased parents had been in the home.”

Deputies gathered enough evidence to determine Shane and his girlfriend were potential suspects in the murder of his parents, however it’s unclear if the girlfriend’s death was self-inflicted or if someone else killed her.

When asked how the murders could have gone undetected for so long, Carly said William and Eileen “weren’t very involved in the community” and had minimal contact with people outside their home.”

It also sounds like Shane may have lived with Sue Bin’s body for a period of time after her death.  Authorities said they “had collaborated suicide” but Sue Bin “had clearly been deceased longer than he had” when the bodies were found.

Authorities also clarified that Sue Bin’s manner of death was ruled undetermined because “it’s hard to say” from the angle of the bullet wound whether she shot herself or was shot by Shane.

“It’s unknown at the time who killed who,” Carly said. With all of the involved people deceased, the department will soon be closing the case, she added.

In terms of how long Shane and Sue Bin lived with the bodies for, according to online records, Shane was playing video games on December 23.

Neighbors have spoken about the incident.

“It was very sobering,” said Bill Bosma. “It was in our gut that may have been what happened, but hearing it now… it confirmed our fears.”

“We noticed when we would drive by there was always a lot of activity in the driveway, working on cars and in the yard. We both noticed that. Suddenly, it seemed like all activity had stopped,” said Cheri Bosma. “It just didn’t seem right.”

Online sleuthers have put together a very comprehensive document regarding this case. You can view it here.
