In the quiet lakeshore community of Grand Haven Township, Michigan, the unthinkable unfolded behind the walls of what appeared to be an ordinary family home. When firefighters responded to reports of smoke on July 24, 2026, they discovered a scene that would leave an entire community searching for answers: eight members of the same family were dead. Investigators later determined that a husband and father had fatally shot his wife and their six children before taking his own life and setting the home on fire, in what authorities have called a murder-suicide. The motive remains under investigation, and the tragedy has shaken families across the country.
The people involved in this horrific case are Kristopher ‘Kris’ Karolkiewicz, his wife Amanda ‘Mandy’ and their six children – Keegan, Teddy, Bennett, and Smith: Four boys ranging in ages from 5 to 15. They also had two girls who they adopted from China – Caroline and Ella – both 11.
Mandy was an active Reddit user over the years and a lot of background in this case comes from her posts. She posted that she met Kris when she was an intern and he was her supervisor at a beverage company in 2008. He was allegedly divorced when they started dating.
Mandy and Kris married in August 2009, meaning they had been married for around 17 years at the time of the killings.

The couple’s first child was born on April 25, 2011. Mandy said “the best day of my life (so far).” Two more sons followed over the next four years.
On the couple’s ten-year anniversary in 2019, Kris wrote on social media “I’m a very lucky guy.”
In her professional career, Mandy worked in banking for a period of time, as well as working for an insurance agency. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years before returning to work in the education field.

Mandy worked as a substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools (GHAPS) at the time she died.
In January 2026, GHAPS recognized her in a Facebook post, praising her for going “above and beyond for students, especially when they’re having a hard day, responding with empathy, patience, and care.”
Mandy’s cousin Emily Jones has said “She was just this again, the sweetest, funniest person that you could ever meet, and she was a delight, a light in her community, a light in her family’s lives.”
“She was bubbly,” Emily continued “She was funny. She was just that rare person that truly lit up any room she walked into.”
“Mandy’s lot in life was to be a mom,” Emily said. “Every day, her focus was on them and making memories with them… and giving them the best experiences that she possibly could.”
“The kids loved her back with a fierceness,” Emily said. “They just had such a beautiful relationship.”
Kris worked primarily in healthcare sales, medical technology, and healthcare education. In terms of his most recent role, he was the National VP of Sales and Marketing for the American Heart Association. He worked in that position from September 2023 until July 2026, when his employment ended.
The American Heart Association confirmed that his employment ended in July 2026, but it has not publicly stated whether he resigned, was laid off, or was terminated. The organization has not provided a reason for the separation.
The family lived in Grand Haven, Michigan. The population of Grand Haven is approximately 11,044 according to recent estimates.
Before we get into details about the July 2026 incident, we want to go into some more information about some events that happened within the family.
In 2020, Mandy’s step-brother Allston Lawwill died from a fentanyl overdose.
Allston Tyler Lawwill passed away unexpectedly at the age of 28 on November 22, 2020. Allston was born on December 31, 1991 in Arlington, Virginia and grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan, before his family moved to Caledonia, Michigan. Allston graduated from Caledonia High School after meeting his high school sweetheart, Kassandra Lawwill, who he would later marry and build a family with at their home in Lake Odessa, Michigan.
Allston is survived by Kassandra and his three beautiful children, Brennan (6), Emery (4), and Kensley (3). He is also survived by his mother and stepfather, Barbara Lawwill-Lombardi and Jim Lombardi; father and stepmother, Steven and Rebecca Lawwill; sister, Jericca Rys (Austin); stepsisters, Molly Cessna (Kyle) and Mandy Karolkiewicz (Kris); and grandparents, Ronald and Jeanette Lawwill and Ruby Adams. He is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Nathaniel Perry and his baby brother, Dillan.
Mandy and Allston also had a second ‘baby brother’ called Dillan who died, according to a family fundraising page. Further details on that tragedy have not been shared.
Back to 2026.
“She was traveling all the time, and she was brave taking six kids on some of these trips,” said her cousin Emily. “They had gone in June to an adventure in Canada.”
In the weeks prior to July 24, Mandy took her two daughters on a trip to China that she posted about on social media. They visited Disneyland in Shanghai.
Mandy’s cousin Emily said that Mandy deliberately carved out one-on-one time with each child, building a unique relationship with each of them.
Family have said that Mandy felt it was “critically important” that her daughters understand where they came from, appreciate their heritage and feel proud of it.
Emily also explained why Mandy wanted to adopt. That dream started in childhood, after a teacher read a book about adopting a child from China when Mandy was in third grade. Mandy told her mother she wanted to adopt a little girl from China someday.
“She carried that into adulthood. She adopted two.”
At around 8.30am on Friday July 24, 2026, authorities received reports from neighbors about the smell of smoke in the Riverside Trail area. Firefighters responded and could not locate any fire activity, so they cleared the area.
At 11.40am, additional 911 calls were made that indicated white smoke was coming from the Karolkiewicz home. Firefighters returned to the property to extinguish the flames. When they entered the home, they found the eight family members deceased. The family pets were also found deceased.
Initial evidence indicated that some of the deceased had suffered gunshot wounds and that the fire had been intentionally set.
Captain Jacob Sparks made a statement and said that eight people, including six children had been found deceased. Every person who was known to live at the address was said to be deceased. Authorities said there was no threat to the public. There were no previous police calls to the home, and no prior criminal history has been identified for Kris.
Autopsies were carried out on the victims. On July 27, we learned that Kristopher fatally shot Amanda and their six children. He then set multiple fires in different parts of the home before taking his own life.
It is believed that none of the deceased died from the fires. It is believed Kris set the fires in an effort to destroy evidence.
Many people have been searching for answers as to a motive and online sleuths discovered Mandy’s Reddit posts.
“I grew up in Metro Detroit, now I’m in a small beach town in West Michigan,” she wrote in 2024. “It’s like living in a Hallmark Movie.”
In a thread posted in 2024, she described meeting her husband when she was an intern and about how he had been unfaithful in their marriage.
“He was divorced and older than me … fast forward ten years and five kids, he was cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern,” Mandy wrote..
“After about a year of self-loathing, I remember crying and looking at myself in the mirror and realizing how (expletive) it was that I was the one who was living so miserably because of what he did. I finally realized that I had been the only person who has ever showed up for myself my whole entire life.”
Mandy said she wouldn’t have worked toward reconciliation with her husband if not for the couple’s six children.
“I kept telling myself, ‘I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now.’ They have no idea — I faked it ’till we made it. We’re in a much better place 4.5 years out, but it’s still a fight to stay in a healthy place.
In one of her first posts in the subreddit “As One After Infidelity” — a peer support group for reconciliation after cheating — she shared red flags in her marriage.
“We have six kids, so the idea of leaving is insanely terrifying,” she wrote in 2024 on Reddit. “He’s always had major red flags that I ignored due to my own trauma and anxious attachment. He was raised in a toxic family dynamic that encouraged lying about everything.
“… After the most recent incident of catching him being sneaky, I insisted he go back to (independent counseling) and we attempt (marriage counseling) for the first time. It’s all so confusing, because our day-to-day lives and dynamics are truly good, until every so often now when he pulls sneaky (expletive).”
‘I couldn’t even start healing until I felt that I saw him recieve [sic] some negative karma. He ended up being let go from a company, was unemployed for six months, then got a new job that wasn’t that great, and was then laid off again nine months later,’ she recalled.
‘I watched his ego FINALLY break, and together we searched, manifested, and finally landed him the best career he’s ever had. I finally feel like he experienced consequences from his choices.’
Mandy wrote about the decision to cut extended family from their lives to protect their mental health, and the time she shoved her husband after learning of his “emotional” affair.
“I don’t feel bad still,” she commented in 2024 on Reddit. “He towers over me and destroyed me mentally. It felt like I was being assaulted and needed to fight back. I think it’s a fight or flight thing.”
She also shared the couple’s experience in therapy and sobriety.
“I stopped drinking when I started therapy,” she wrote. “I decided if I was gonna work through things I should work through them without having something to numb discomfort. Physically, I consistently felt so much healthier without it, so I decided to keep at it — almost two years later.”
She wrote that her husband didn’t smoke or drink on a thread in 2023, and documented how she still felt triggered at times in 2024.
“For me, ‘safety’ is the ability to trust that (he) will not get angry or defensive when I’m triggered, and will help to carry me through it,” she wrote. “We’re almost five years out, and he’s trying, but still struggles with defensiveness. But in general, am I happy? Yes. I wouldn’t say I feel safety in my emotions, because he still struggles with receiving my triggers without defensiveness, and that’s slowing down my ability to regain feelings of safety.”
“It makes me really angry to think that maybe they really don’t think about it the way we do,” she wrote in a separate post in 2024 on Reddit. “Even their deepest sorrow isn’t (anywhere) near the permanent changes made to our psyches when they cheat.”
Counseling, she wrote, often left her husband more frustrated than ever.
“He was having trouble sleeping and was so angry and mad at himself because the counselor asked him if he heard me. It seems like such a big reaction to that pretty normal question from a marriage counselor. He is so sensitive to correction that I’m feeling so discouraged that we’ll ever be able to make progress.”
Mandy wrote on Reddit that Kris had an eye lift, known as an upper blepharoplasty.
She said she ‘lost tons of weight during the aftermath,’ but despite her physical glow-up, she ‘never felt better’ and ‘still internally blamed myself for not being ‘enough’ of what he wanted.’
Life with six children, she wrote in 2024, wasn’t always easy.
‘I used to be staunchly pro-life. I birthed three boys and adopted two daughters. I was ademant [sic] that five kids was my max. Then I was unexpectedly pregnant,’ she wrote in an abortion subreddit thread two years ago.
‘I am now staunchly pro-choice, because no one should be forced to the brink of a mental health crisis bc of failed birth control. I am loud and proud that if we ever find ourselves pregnant again, I will take the abortion meds I now keep on hand in case myself or my daughters find ourselves in need.’
Amanda said her youngest son is ‘hilarious’ and that ‘I love him so much,’ but also described him as the ‘hardest child I have had.’
‘My husband will be sixty when he graduates high school. I am stretched way too thin, and am often on the brink. I have had to ask for so much help this time around,’ she shared.
Mandy’s cousin Emily said “I would ask people to keep in mind that Mandy was a real person, and she had a family that loved her and that misses her. And those six children, they didn’t even get the opportunity to grow up.”
“We may never know what her relationship was with her husband on a day-to-day basis,” Emily said. “You never saw her sad. You never saw her upset. She just always looked on the bright side.”
Steve Lawwill, Mandy’s father, shared a family photo on social media shortly after the killings, writing, “So grateful for the joy they brought into our life. We are just so shattered.”
“We pray for God’s peace and comfort as we grieve their deaths and honor their lives,” Steve and Rebecca Lawwill said in a statement to media. “We ask that the media give our family space in the weeks and months ahead, and that they respect the privacy of all who loved Mandy and the children.”
We have learned that Mandy likely died prior to the children.
Ottawa Sheriff’s Office Captain Jacob Sparks told News 8 in an email that evidence and autopsy results suggest Amanda Karolkiewicz “likely died earlier than the children”.
A death certificate for the mum lists her date of death as “on or after” July 23 — but also notes the date of injury as July 24, the outlet reported.
However, all six children — Keegan, 15, Bennett, 12, Smith, 11, Ella, 11, Caroline, 11 and Theodore, 5 — and Kristopher Karolkiewicz died on July 24.
“We don’t have an exact timeline yet and are still working to establish that,” Capt. Sparks told the outlet.
The times of death are marked “unknown” and the documents indicate that each of them died immediately or within seconds of being shot, according to the outlet.
Officials said their bodies were found in different bedrooms throughout the Grand Haven home.
