Shannon Ryan, 39, is now facing a second-degree murder charge in the case of missing mother, Leila Cavett, Hollywood police announced May 11th, 2021.
Ryan is also facing a tampering with evidence charge, police said.
The announcement of these charges comes weeks after a federal kidnapping charge was dropped against Ryan.
Cavett, 21, was last seen on the night of July 25, 2020, hours before her son, Kamdyn, was found wandering alone in a shirt and diaper. They had arrived in South Florida the day before she went missing. Her vehicle was found unattended July 28 in Hollywood.
Ryan was originally arrested in early August 2020 and charged him with kidnapping Cavett’s son with the intent of collecting a ransom, reward or other benefit and lying to a federal officer.
After the federal charge was dropped, Miramar Police charged him with child neglect without great bodily harm.
The arrest affidavit for the second degree murder charge and tampering with evidence details the circumstances surrounding Leila’s disappearance, suspected murder, and Shannon’s involvement.
Ryan appeared in bond court Wednesday, May 12th, on the new charges and is being held without bond after being determined a flight risk.
Investigators said they’ve been keeping an eye on Cavett’s bank accounts and social media accounts, but there has been no activity.
Leila Cavett’s body has not been found.
On May 26th, Ryan appeared in court for his arraignment hearing where he pled not guilty to the murder charge.
This quote from Leila’s father comes from nbcmiami, “Shannon Ryan, you’re a beast and you need to be punished for everything you did to my child,” said Curtis Cavett.
“You stabbed my daughter. You chopped her up and put her in a garbage bag,” Curtis Cavett said.
His next court hearing takes place August 27th. He is still being held without bond at a Broward County jail.
